Virtuous Pie, Plant-Based Restaurant Opens in Portland, OR

Virtuous Pie Portland

Virtuous Pie, which gained immediate success after its Vancouver, Canada location opened in 2016, opens its doors Saturday, June 10th on SE Division Street in Portland’s Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood. The 1,900 square-foot fast-casual restaurant will serve a 100% plant-based menu of handcrafted pizzas and artisanal ice cream. This will mark Virtuous Pie’s first location in the U.S.

“Portland is an important food city, with an established and vibrant vegan community,” says Jim Vesal, Virtuous Pie’s Executive Chef. “However, at Virtuous Pie, we want to change the way people eat, not just in Portland or Vancouver, but across the continent. People are becoming increasingly conscientious about their eating habits and how it affects the environment, and we want to be a part of the movement towards more mindful eating.”

Virtuous Pie’s innovative menu features sustainable and locally-influenced food options in an inclusive and welcoming environment. The 100% plant-based pizzas combine unique flavor pairings using three-day dough and house-made nut cheeses, including cashew mozzarella, almond ricotta, and non-GMO tofu feta. The full menu can be found here.

Two new exclusive pies are featured on the Portland menu, including Meatball + Chèvre, with San Marzano Tomato Sauce, Baerlic Brewing Chorizo Meatballs, Creamed Spinach, Lemon Herb Chevre, Basil, and Fresh Parm, and The Catalan, with Smoky Romesco, Patatas Bravas, Tarragon Requeson, Charred Scallion, Asparagus, and Saffron Aioli.

The restaurant also offers a selection of dairy-free ice creams, all made in-house. Flavors include Salted Caramel Double Chocolate, Mint + Dark Chocolate, Coffee + Donuts, Lavender + Meyer Lemon, Turmeric + Black Pepper, and two new Portland exclusives: Charcoal Banana Coconut, made with caramelized bananas blended with activated charcoal and coconut flakes, and Marionberry Cheesecake with a tofu “cream cheese” swirl and gluten-free shortbread. Other new Portland additions include a house-made gluten-free waffle cone, affogato, ice cream sandwiches, and ice cream floats made with a choice of soda or kombucha.

In addition to the feel-good food, Virtuous Pie’s new location has partnered with Portland’s Heart Coffee Roasters for a drip coffee and espresso program centered around rotating house-made dairy-free milks. Local craft beer, kombucha, cider, and wine will be available on tap and by the bottle or glass. Beers are from Mt. Tabor Brewing, Ex Novo Brewing Co., Baerlic Brewing Co., Magnolia Brewing Co., Ecliptic Brewing and Fort George Brewery; cider from Finnriver Cidery; wines from Day Wines and St. Reginald Parish, and kombucha from Happy Mountain. House cocktails will be added to the menu in the months following the opening, along with brunch.

Inspired by Portland’s access to the great outdoors, Virtuous Pie worked with local designers Bright Designlab to create a modern and visually stunning space. Using Pacific Northwest wood, materials and plants, the restaurant is warm, comfortable and inviting. Reclaimed Douglas Fir beams, custom hand drawn wallpaper and eclectic furniture add pops of color, pattern, and texture. The two-level restaurant features communal seating for larger groups and individual counter seating, along with lounge seating on the mezzanine.

Virtuous Pie is committed to connecting with the local community and being a loyal neighbor through events, volunteering, and collaborations. In Vancouver, the restaurant provides meal programs, food donations and cooking education for local charities and organizations such as Sheway, Vancouver Humane Society,  Growing Chefs, and the Pivot Foundation. In the coming months, Virtuous Pie will announce the Portland organizations with whom they will partner.
