Vegan Republic, the Berkeley store run by Animal Place sanctuary, is now doing a monthly Snack Club. All store proceeds support the rescue and care of cows, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, and more.
There are 6-9 different treats each month, both savory and sweet, often seasonally inspired, for a ridiculously low $25. Some of these brands are not widely available outside of big-city stores – Vegan Republic is the only all-vegan store in the entire state of California!
Recent snack boxes have included Surf Sweets gummy candy, Primal Strips jerky, No Whey peanut butter cups, Mediterra snack bars, Sjaak’s chocolates, Brami lupini bean snacks, Su Mama jerky, Barr Necessities cookies, Mavuno dried jackfruit, and Eli’s Earth Bars.
In addition to the monthly Snack Club, Vegan Republic’s online store sells select hard-to-find items. There’s a “No Egg on Your Face” pack of four different egg substitutes for scrambling, baking, quiche-ing, etc.; multipacks of trendy products like Butler Soy Curls, Phoney Baloney’s Coconut Bacon, Upton’s BBQ jackfruit. There’s even a doggie bag snack pack for good dogs.
Animal Place, founded in 1989, is one of the oldest and largest animal sanctuaries in the nation. Its 600-acre sanctuary in Grass Valley, California and 60-acre shelter in Vacaville fill a much-needed niche of farmed animal rescue, sanctuary, education, and adoption. Animals arrive from small and large farms, slaughterhouses, research facilities, and neglect or cruelty cases. In 2010, Animal Place began rescuing animals directly from California egg farms, and since then has saved more than 25,000 hens. In addition to Vegan Republic, Animal Place also runs a B&B adjacent to the sanctuary for overnight guests who want to mingle with the animals. For more information, visit www.animalplace.org.
